This section features various tools used for work holding, sanding and clamping. Below each picture is a short description in the order that they are viewed.
1. A cheap faceplate. Drill a hole the size of the largest diameter of the nut. Tap the nut into the hold and glue it by dripping epoxy around the nut. Do not use this faceplate for heavy stuff.
2. A glued up faceplate with double layers
A sanding disk made from 3/4 inch pine, a faceplate and sticky 10″ sanding material. I use this for flattening bowl segments. See my book on making bowls from boards.
1. A shot of all my shop-made vacuum chucks
2. The back side of the vacuum chuck faceplate made for my stubby.
3. The front side of the stubby vacuum chuck. The housing is a 4″ pipe coupler and the seal is a door seal from Lowe’s. The multi-ribbed soft style works best. It is sticky back and I put one layer on the inside edge and one at the very edge. Stagger the joints. This chuck held so well it imploded a bowl
1. Vacuum rotary adapter made for my stubby and jet.
2. Sealing on the hand wheel of my Stubby but works on my Jet and pen lathe as well.
1. A shop-made drive center for BIG stuff made from a cheap faceplate? The center pin is made from a cut off 1-8 bolt with a threaded hole in its center. It is screwed into the faceplate and a sharpened pin in screwed into it.
2. The face-plates mounting holes are threaded and sharpened bolts are screwed into each to make up the outer pins. These pins can be ground to any shape and they can be screwed in-out of the faceplate to fit uneven logs.
1. A small press made for clamping bowl segments. I use this in making ringed bowls See my book on making bowls from board.
2. For big ring bowls I use this sky clamp
A sled in my sled for cutting perfect 45’s
This setup allowed me to drill a 36″ tube. It used a 6ft forsner bit made from drill rod. I aspire to use this setup for large bore flutes. I know …… totally insane…. but it worked.
Cutting full rings from a board, used in making ringed segmented bowls using a 45 degree jig. More is available in the “Bowls from Boards” book.
